NEST IDEA :: About us
Background

NEST (New and Emerging Science and Technology) is a new activity within the 6th Framework Programme, supporting unconventional and visionary research with the potential to open new fields for European science and technology. It also supports research on new potential problems uncovered by science and helps to consolidate European efforts in emerging fields of research.

A very important difference between NEST and other Thematic Areas of FP6 is its flexibility: in FP6 Priority Areas, research activities must follow the specific Work Programmes and research lines that the FP considers of interest; under NEST, financed action lines are wider and less defined and finance granting is based on the opportunities projects can generate and the needs they can meet.

Since its main function is to encourage research in new areas, NEST operates in close cooperation with the research community in Europe as the main source of creativity and new ideas.

Science and Technology are constantly evolving, as does the environment and the problems affecting European society. It is thus not possible to safely foretell the problems that will worry European society and the whole world. Likewise, we cannot predict future opportunities that may arise.

Basic research must not be neglected at any point. Research just to obtain knowledge and thereby to open up new opportunities, to be ready to tackle new problems and to become a leading knowledge society.

While earlier Framework Programmes disregarded basic research, it is fundable under FP6, in the new "NEST" activity. It was seen as vital to promote this new opportunity among the scientific community.

There is one aspect, however, that is special about activities financed by NEST: The initiative focuses on emerging science and technology, i.e. innovative ideas, but scientist are wary to disclose their innovated ideas for fear that these may be "stolen", since in this phase their inventions can not yet be protected by patents or IPR. NEST addresses ideas that are still in their preliminary phase, totally innovative and different from present research lines financed by FP6 Thematic Areas.

It was against this background that the original idea of NEST-IDEA project arose: New and Emerging Science and Technology - Information on Development of Emerging Activities.
